Manager Scott Davidson is confident that Thurso will soon start climbing off the bottom of the North Caledonian League table after a spirited performance against Golspie at the Dammies.

The Vikings were 3-0 down at half-time and trailed 4-1 just after the hour mark, but they battled back to make it 4-3 and pushed hard for an elusive equaliser in the closing stages.

Davidson said after Saturday's game: "They maybe only had four chances and they scored four goals.

"We gave them three cheap goals in the first half. That's something that we need to try and cancel out if we can.

"But there are a lot of positives to take, even for it being a defeat. Scoring three goals, normally that would be a positive thing and you'd be winning the game.

"We just feel a bit hard done by not to get even a draw out of it.

"It's hard to take right now, thinking that we've lost 4-3, but I can't fault anyone that was on the park today. They gave us 100 per cent and that's all we can ask for.

"We were feeling a bit hard done by to come in 3-0 down at half-time considering we'd played so well in the first half, but I put that upon the boys – we can't come off the park without at least scoring today."

Alexander Mackay hit a double for Golspie before Korbyn Cameron extended their lead before the break.

Saleem Bremner bundled in Thurso's first goal early in the second period only for Cameron to add his second of the afternoon.

Darren Sheppard reduced the deficit with an unstoppable header, then James Murray showed great perseverance as he battled his way through a clutch of defenders before lifting the ball high into the net.

Davidson added: "We're getting good numbers at training. We have a good core squad – that's the first time in a good while we've had to leave boys out of the squad.

"There's good morale coming now. That's what we talked about before the game. We trained very well this week and we're bringing it into a Saturday now, hopefully."

The Vikings are away to Inverness Athletic this weekend before back-to-back home fixtures against St Duthus and Clachnacuddin "A".
