THURSO overcame the challenge of the county's three other golf clubs – Reay, Wick and Lybster – to win the Ulbster Cup last weekend.

In the quarter-finals the closest match saw Reay A beat Lybster A by one hole. Wick A, Thurso B and Thurso A won their matches convincingly against Wick B, Reay B and Lybster B respectively.

In semi-finals Reay beat Wick quite comfortably, which was a slight surprise, while Thurso A came out on top against Thurso B.

And so Thurso A and Reay A faced each other in Sunday's final.

The first match was Jim Sangster and Alan Swanson against Tom Ross and Michael Smith. Thurso got up and down to win the first hole and the next three holes were halved in par.

At the fifth Ross holed a great downhill 15ft putt but Swanson responded by holing a 10-footer uphill for a half in par.

The sixth was halved in par and Thurso got up and down at the seventh to go two up.

The eighth was halved in par and Thurso went three up after getting up and down at the ninth.

The 10th was halved in regulation par and Thurso went four up after a par at the 11th.

A great tee shot from Sangster saw Thurso win the 12th to go five up.

At the 13th Ross holed 15-footer, but Swanson responded from 10 feet.

The 14th was halved with bogeys and the 15th halved with pars.

Thurso had an excellent par at the 16th to go six up. The 17th was halved in par and Thurso won the 18th with another regulation par to finish seven up.

In the other match David Dunbar and Graeme Henderson were against Lee Parnell and Cammie Ross.

A scrappy start saw first and second halved in bogey and Reay edged ahead at third with a par.

The fourth and fifth were halved in pars. Thurso lost ball off tee at sixth, which saw Reay go two up.

The seventh was halved in pars. At the eighth Dunbar drove his tee shot to eight feet, which saw Thurso win with a birdie.

A par at nine was good enough for Thurso to draw level at the turn.

A par at 10 put Thurso one up but Reay drew level again at the 11th.

The 12th and 13th were halved and Reay won 14th with a birdie two after a fine tee shot to go one up.

Thurso then won 16th to tie match again and edged ahead winning the 17th with a par.

Reay's approach to the last found the greenside bunker and they failed to get up and down allowing Thurso to win hole with a par a finish two up.

This saw Thurso win the Ulbster Cup.
