JOHN Blake, Ross McEwan and Davie Alexander, from the fly-fishing section of Thurso Branch of the Royal British Legion, represented the Highlands and Islands area in the national competition held on the Morton Reservoir in West Lothian.

The competition comprised nine three-man teams – one team from each area – competing on a rotational pegged-bank fishing basis.

After a long day’s fishing, the Thurso team managed to catch their four fish bag limit each, with all additional rainbow trout returned and counted as an extra pound to the total weight.

At the prize-giving after a dinner in a hotel in Livingston, the team from Bridge of Weir were declared the winners, with Thurso second by a margin of eight ounces. Each of the top three teams had hauls of over 40 pounds,

Ross McEwan won the prizes for the heaviest basket (18lb) and heaviest fish (7lb 6oz).
