Thurso FC fun days are a big hit
THURSO FC held their annual youth fun days at Sir Georges Park on Saturday and Sunday.
Conditions were ideal, with both the junior and the senior events going ahead on dry, still days. Disappointingly, Saturday’s event attracted just four teams to each of the under-13 and under-15 competitions. While the entries were poor, the standard of football was very high with both round-robin leagues featuring some very competitive games, full of good football.
The under-13 tournaments this summer have been dominated by East End but on Saturday they found one too good for them.
The league winners met in the final with a single goal good enough to claim victory for the Swifts. The Thurso side also had the player-of-the-tournament in Michael Baillie. The under-15s was also keenly contested with Swifts coming through to win their league with three wins. The other league saw Canisbay draw two matches before winning the third to stake their place in the final.
Again, the final was settled by a single goal in favour of the village outfit, who also had the player-of-the-tournament in Danny Coghill.

On Sunday, the emphasis was exclusively on fun with the under-7, under-9 and under-11 events going ahead without the keeping of scores and with no winners’ trophies at stake.
The new regime, which is being mirrored by youth clubs throughout Scotland, has bedded in well and ensures all the youngsters get an equal amount of game-time.
The events also lack referees, who did not seem to be missed. After the three events, all the youngsters who took part received a commemorative badge from Thurso FC
