A challenge match organised by young footballers from Thurso High School has raised more than £1000 for a cancer charity.

The idea stemmed from a few boys splitting into teams at break time. It grew into a more competitive affair, with one of the pupils, Ben Durrand, taking the lead and enlisting the help of one of his friends' dads to act as referee for the game between Barmy Army and Thurso Young Boys.

The match attracted so much interest around the school that the boys decided to run it as a charity event and set up a fundraising web page – estimating their target at £200. It has generated more than five times that sum, with the total now sitting at around £1100.

Cancer Research UK was the chosen charity as it is close to the hearts of a few of the organisers.

The match was played on a cold but still evening at Thurso’s 3G pitch at Naver, with approximately 100 spectators watching under the floodlights.

It finished in an 8-2 victory to the Barmy Army, with some excellent football on display and some spectacular goals.

Scorers for Barmy Army were Ben Durrand (2), Euan Kennedy (2), Owen Bain, Lewis Swan, Steven Esson and Kenzie Cannop, with Logan Anthony and Tom Armitage on target for Thurso Young Boys.
