S2 teams from Thurso and Wick high schools took on their counterparts from two Orkney schools at a netball festival in Kirkwall.

While the Caithness schools had one team each, both Kirkwall Grammar School and Stromness Academy were represented by two teams.

It was a round-robin tournament, with teams playing each other in 12-minute games.

Stromness Academy "1" came out on top with a clean sweep of victories, with Stromness "2" as runners-up and Kirkwall Grammar School “1” third. Wick took fourth place, ahead of Kirkwall “2” and Thurso.

Thurso coach Seonaid MacDonald said: "This was Thurso's first-ever trip away and they have learnt so much from playing against the experienced sides of Stromness and Kirkwall.

"The Thurso pupils greatly improved as the day went on. It was a great opportunity to play against five different teams and gain much-needed match play.

"This is the first year we have held a tournament between the four schools and it has been excellent for the girls."

She added: "Thurso High School would really like to thank the PTA for funding this trip."

Wick coach Pam Bain said: "It was our S2 pupils’ first competition this season and the girls gained a lot from the experience. They bonded well with the Orkney girls who made us feel so welcome.

"It would be good to make this a more regular event to give us more much-needed competition."
