A NEW series of LTA Tennis for Kids sessions will get under way next week in Thurso.

Courses are run throughout the UK at tennis venues and schools to introduce young children to the sport.

It follows on from this summer’s first set of sessions at Thurso Squash, Tennis and Racketball Club in the town’s Millbank Road. These came to an end in June, with the new courses due to get under way on Monday, July 22, at the same venue.

The cost of attending LTA Tennis for Kids is £25 (plus £4.99pp) which includes a personalised tennis T-shirt, a junior racket, three tennis balls and six one-hour tennis sessions presented by a trained LTA qualified coach.

Kids from the ages of four to 11 years can take part.

I see these sessions as the first step to getting youngsters involved in playing racket sports, and in particular tennis, now that we have such excellent facilities.

The courses also offer young leaders from the high school the opportunity to gain valuable experience in working with young children.

Local coach Carole Cameron said: “I have been very fortunate to have worked with three excellent young leaders since I started delivering these courses last summer.

“As a coach, I see these sessions as the first step to getting youngsters involved in playing racket sports, and in particular tennis, now that we have such excellent facilities at the club as well as the public tennis courts at Olrig Street in Thurso.

“It has been a pleasure to meet and get to know the children and parents who have come along and to watch the children grow in confidence within the group and improve their racket and ball skills.

“Parents have been kind enough to get involved when asked to do so. I am very grateful to my husband, Ian Cameron, and young leader Ellie Sutherland who helped at each of the previous sessions to ensure that every child was involved, had a sense of achievement and had fun whatever their level of ability.”

Thanks to the generosity of Thurso Co-op store, the youngsters and parents enjoyed some Wimbledon-style strawberries and ice cream to round off the last session on June 23.
