CAITHNESS Rugby Club attracted about 700 primary school pupils to two tag tourneys they ran in the county last Thursday and Friday.

They were the climax of a year’s coach-ing conducted by club development officer Colin Sangster and Kane Cameron, the club’s modern apprentice.

The benefits of the sessions showed in the high overall standard of play throughout the tournaments in Thurso and Wick, with a lot of close games including the finals.

In Thurso, the P4/5 section was won by Mount Pleasant who beat Castletown in the final. The P6/7 final was a real nail-biter with Halkirk/Reay beating Miller in overtime.

In Wick, the games were equally competitive with North beating Pulteneytown, again in overtime, and Hillhead beating Pulteneytown in the P6/7 final.

Club spokeswoman Sarah Campbell said: "All credit to all the children who took part. It was great to see so many playing to the best of their ability, displaying a lot of skill in the process."

Next up for the youngsters are two summer camps being run by Mr Sangster during the holidays with information on how to take part being made available through schools.
