PENTLAND United surged to the top of Division One after a 4-0 thumping of Thurso Swifts.

Aiden Reid, Sean Campbell, Gary Manson – via the penalty spot – and Murray MacIntosh were on target for United as they moved a point ahead of Wick Groats.

United boss Ross Sutherland is delighted with their recent form – more so given the packed fixture schedule they’ve undergone recently.

Sutherland said: “That was our fourth game in 10 days so to say we’re looking forward to the 10-day break we’re now facing is an understatement.

“Some of the guys were looking a bit ‘leggy’ in the first half-hour so playing all those games in such a short space of time was taking its toll.

“At half-time I told the lads that we just needed one more big effort as there is a well-earned rest waiting for us.

“They looked a bit livelier afterwards and knocked the ball about well and got our goals.

“There was one slight concern when Swifts’ James Swan was sent off for a lunge at Cameron Montgomery.

“Cameron is only 15 so we were concerned but he’s okay. Quite a welcome into senior football for him, though.

“We’re glad to get the result and be top. After beating Wick Groats last week, it would have been disastrous had we not capitalised on that result.”
