Stuart Swanson took first place in Caithness Cycling Club’s weekly 10-mile time trial, with Alistair Miller and Lorna Stanger second and third.

Conditions were a definite improvement on the previous three weeks but still far from ideal, with a temperature of 11C and winds of 17 to 30 mph from the south-east, making for a tough outward leg on the Watten road course.

For Martine Hughes, Iain Miller and Stuart Swanson this was their first event of the season and their times will doubtless soon improve significantly. The other four riders all had their best times of the year, led by Roger Broughton who took a massive five minutes off his time to gain the maximum of six points in the season-long Handicap League.

He was followed by Alistair Miller who improved by two minutes.

Times: 1 Stuart Swanson, 26 min 56 sec; 2 Alistair Miller, 27.32; 3 Lorna Stanger, 28.48; 4 Roger Broughton, 29.44; 5 Phil Cartwright, 31.15; 6 Iain Miller, 31.35; 7 Martine Hughes, 37.40.

Last Thursday saw improvements in weather and turnout for Wick Wheelers’ 10-mile time trial, with four riders making their debut for the season.

Most riders recorded their fastest times so far this year with Iain Nicolson’s return giving a challenge to Danny Miller’s dominance.

Coralie Ross was again the fastest lady.

Times: 1 Danny Miller, 24 min 10 sec; 2 Iain Nicholson, 25.02; 3 Hamish McAllan, 25.46; 4 Alistair Miller, 26.29; 5 Michael Duffy, 28.02; 6 Charlie Mackay, 28.53; 7 James Munro, 29.10; 8 Coralie Ross, 31.01; 9 Lisa Coghill, 33.13.
