WICK assistant boss Ross Suttar was unable to give his verdict on the four penalties awarded because he turned his back on them.

The football fraternity is a very superstitious one and Suttar was no different during Wednesday’s Derby of the North against Brora.

While everyone else at Dudgeon Park was paying a keen eye on the spot kicks taken, Suttar chose to take another view.

He said: “To be honest with you, I don’t watch penalties in general so I can’t even comment on how good or bad the ones we took tonight were.

“I usually watch the goalies at the opposite end and judge by their reactions on whether or not a penalty kick has gone in.

“Should we have swapped penalty takers when we got the second one? It’s one of those when the player who has knocked in the first one is full of confidence and wants to take the second.

“Obviously Sam missed and so we changed to Craig when we got the third one. Fair play to Sam for putting his hand up to take the first two and fair play to Craig for taking over spot-kick duties.

“Would the penalty we missed have changed the game had we scored? We don’t know.”

Suttar admitted that while it was sore not to take the three points back up the road, a draw was a fair result.

He added: “Over the course of the game, 2-2 was probable a fair result. Both front lines didn’t give either back fours much trouble.

“But the one time they got behind our lines, they score a well-taken equaliser.

“Sore to lose the late goal but we’re now one defeat in the last 14. This run shows that we can compete in the upper half of the table – which is good given the slow start we had to the season.

“It’s about getting the fittest and strongest team on the park right now. Over the course of the season we’ve had too many injuries and suspensions and it has played a big part.

“Tonight we were not far off full strength. David Allan is getting back into the team. Alan Farquhar is also getting more minutes under his belt – it is a shame to see it finally come together as we head towards the end of the season.”

Fraserburgh are next up for Wick tomorrow at Harmsworth Park and Suttar envisages a tight encounter.

He added: “Fraserburgh will make it hard for us but our squad should be looking at that game thinking we can get something from it.

“We all know Harmsworth Park can be a tricky place to play for opponents. You’re running up the hill and the pitch can be heavy on the legs so anything can happen. To be fair to them, Fraserburgh are a good football team. Second spot gets you into the League Cup so they’ll have something to play for on Saturday.”
