Caithness teenager Billy Sutherland proudly represented Scotland at the U18 International Youth Cup in Slovakia – and delivered a strong performance in a highly competitive field of athletes from America, Canada and across Europe.

Out of 64 competitors, Billy placed 13th overall, was the second Scottish runner across the line and was fourth in the world from his age category. Team Scotland finished sixth out of 17 participating nations.

The 15-year-old from Latheronwheel described it as a fantastic experience and he hopes to qualify again next year.

After securing selection for the U18 International Youth Cup at last month’s Broughton Hill Race, Billy competed in the 5K event during the Edinburgh Marathon Festival weekend. He ran an excellent race, finishing second out of a field of 1400 runners.

He was joined on the podium by fellow Ross County Athletics Club members and twin brothers Lachlan Thomas (first) and Kaeden (third).

Unfortunately for Billy, his involvement in last Saturday’s U17 Scottish championships hill race on the Eildon hills, near Melrose, did not go to plan.

He took the initiative on the ascent and was leading the race at the top of the hill, then an error outwith his control cost him valuable time.

Billy continued to fight hard during the race and ran well to claim a creditable fourth place, with further valuable experience gained.

He has three weeks off from race events and will continue with his training.

Billy’s next hill race takes place in Cademuir, near Peebles. It forms a selection race for the Junior Home International which will take place in Wales in September, with Billy hoping to secure another Scotland call-up.

Billy says he is extremely grateful to his Thurso-based coach Sophie Dunnett, from Performance Endurance Training, as well as to the Duncraig Educational Trust and the Lybster and Tannach Fund for funding that helped make it possible for him to compete at these recent events.
