Smiddy '2' darts team setting their sights on league and cup double

Smiddy "2" quartet Martin Campbell, Ryan Campbell, Jordan Oag and Brian Oag are on the verge of a remarkable double on the Caithness darts scene.

The rampant Division Two winners of Wick and District Darts League could become only the second lower-division side to lift the Knockout Cup.

It will be held on April 11 in the Queen's Hotel.

Harper's "B", Seaforth and Norseman will have other ideas in the last four.

It was the Queen's Hotel that achieved the feat previously with a line-up of Alec Johnston, Michael Campbell, Brian Cassie, Brian Cormack and captain Davy Crowden, now the league secretary, in 2003/04.

Seaview are the champions in the top flight. They have been represented by Stewart Tait, James Howden, Calum Shearer, Benji Mackay, James Davidson, Andrew Mowat, Marc Macgregor and Arthur Bruce along with captain Kevin Macgregor.

Results – Division One: Harper's 3, Seaview 5; Norseman 3, Harper's "B" 5; Village Inn 3, Seaforth 5; Smiddy Inn 6, Castletown 2

Division Two: Harper's "C" 8, Smiddy "4" 0; Camps 0, Smiddy "3" 8; Seaforth ladies 0, Smiddy "2" 8.

Maximums were scored by Stewart Tait (Seaview), Alan Nicolson (Harper's "B"), Willie McLean "Norseman), Ryan Campbell (Smiddy "2") and John Gunn (Harper's).

John Scollay (Norseman) had a 115 checkout and Norseman's Willie McLean had a 105 checkout. Martin Campbell (Smiddy "2") managed 15 and 17-darters.

Harper's Bar and Function Suite is the venue on April 4 for the Angus Ross memorial singles. This is an open competition and Angus's widow, Marina, will be in attendance.

League officials are hoping for a good turnout.

Angus was one of the top Scottish players in his day, a British Darts Organisation (BDO) Gold Cup pairs winner along with partner Geordie Bain in 1979/80 and National Darts Association of Great Britain pairs championship winner in 1980/81, with Geordie again.

He was Scottish singles champion 1981 as well as taking the pairs title. He beat the then world champion Eric Bristow 3-2 on his Scottish debut in Newcastle.

He competed in world championships and was part of the great BDO Nations Cup winning team in 1981 as Scotland beat England, along with Rab Smith (Dumfries) and Jocky Wilson (Kirckaldy). The English trio was Eric Bristow, Cliff Lazarenko and John Lowe.

Angus died in 2016.
