Singles titles go to Hania and Liam in U11 badminton championships

A total of 27 youngsters – 10 girls and 17 boys – competed in the under-11 Caithness Junior Badminton Championships on Saturday.

The girls played their singles in two groups, with the top two in each going through to play-offs and the others going into a consolation play-off.

The first of the main draw semi-finals was between Hania Sandecka (Wick) and Abiela Williamson (Ormlie), with Hania winning 15-10, 7-15, 15-6.

The second semi-final was a Dunnet play-off in which Amy Sutherland got the better of April Steven by 15-13, 13-15, 15-13.

Hania and Amy had some good rallies in the final, with Hania taking the title in two sets – 15-10, 15-8.

Meredith Clarke (Dunnet) defeated Iona Warren (Wick) 21-14 in the consolation final.

The boys played their singles in a round-robin format of four groups, with the top two in each progressing to play-offs. The other boys then went to consolation play-off matches.

In the main draw the first semi-final was between Liam Sinclair (Wick) and Archie McNab (Ormlie), with Liam winning 15-3, 15-2.

Finlay Nicolson (Wick) came through the second semi-final against Jack Angus (Wick) with a score of 15-12, 15-5.

Liam came out on top in the all-Wick final, 15-6, 15-4, to pick up the title for the third year in a row.

The consolation final was also an all-Wick contest with Joey Mackay winning 21-10 against Noah Miller.
