HALKIRK distance runner Andrew Douglas continued his supercharged start to the year when he finished second in the men’s race in Saturday’s Scottish National Cross Country Championships in Falkirk.

The 29-year-old went round the 12K course at Callendar Park in 40.17 minutes to finish 15 seconds behind the winner, Andrew Butchart, of Central.

Douglas, who represents North Highland Harriers and Inverclyde AC, finished 28 seconds ahead of third placed Mark Mitchell, Forres

Birchfield Harriers. The championships held in good conditions attracted a field of 631 runners.

The performance sustains the run of form Douglas has been in since starting the year with victories in the Portobello Promathon four mile race on New Year’s day and the Great Edinburgh Cross Country International 8K, which doubled as the Scottish inter-district championships, on January 9.

Douglas, who currently lives and work in Edinburgh, also finished 10th in the Antrim International Cross Country championships 8K and put up a personal best in finishing 18th in the Barcelona Half Marathon in 65 minutes 30 seconds.
