Head coach Tom McKenna admitted Caithness Ladies “totally underperformed” in their SWF Highlands and Islands League Cup semi-final against Sutherland.

Caithness had been hoping to reach the final for the second year in a row but they were beaten 1-0 in Castletown. Katie Grant got the goal in the first half.

“In all honesty, the performance was underwhelming,” McKenna said. “It was probably the worst I’ve seen from the ladies in a long, long time.

“I expressed my feelings – I was just trying to be honest with them.

“We were very poor, regarding the standards that we’ve set for ourselves over the last wee while. I don’t know if it was nerves – we just didn’t perform whatsoever.

“Sutherland were first to everything and they seemed to want it more. They had more desire and their energy levels were far greater than ours.

“We just didn’t get going. They totally underperformed. Everything was panicked, everything was rushed, there was no control.

“There were probably only two or three individuals that could have walked off the park with their heads held high.”

McKenna added: “I can’t take anything away from Sutherland, they deserved their 1-0 victory.”

Sutherland’s opponents in the SWF Highlands and Islands League Cup on Saturday, September 21, will be last year’s double winners Buckie. The Moray side beat Orkney 4-0 in the other semi.

Nairn St Ninian’s decision to withdraw from the league for the remainder of the 2024 season means Caithness have only two remaining fixtures – away to Buckie and to Sutherland, both in September.
