The dry conditions saw the greens at Thurso Golf Club having to be manually watered and they were in tip-top condition for round 16 of the A&A Mackay Builders Summer League.

George Saunders (handicap 22) had 10 pars on his way to a winning total of 43 points. Ronnie Dunnett had four birdies – at the fifth, seventh, 10th and 13th – as he showed the field what he is capable of to come in with 42 points.

Jim Telfer (15) continued his good form with 40 points alongside the steady John Morrison (15) who birdied the eighth.

Andrew Lannon (14) was next best on 39 points, one ahead of Douglas Metcalfe (20) and Andrew Main (7).

Jordan Bain (17), Stewart Gunn (19), Iain Boyd (10) and Sid Campbell (17), who birdied the first, all finished on 37 points.

Saturday saw the annual Lenny Murray memorial tournament. This was played as a three-man scramble.

The old stagers of David Irvine (captain), Jim McLeod and Alan Mackenzie showed the young guns how to do it.

David and Jim are seasoned partners, but their confidence was low after losing the previous day at Brora. However, the addition of Alan to their team created a much-needed spark and spurred them on.

They started with a bogey and also had bogeys at 10 and 16 but birdies at the third, ninth, 11th and 15th offset this and David showed what a class player he is as he led the team to victory, holing a 20ft putt on the 18th. This saw them return a gross 68, nett 58.4.

The young team of K Reid, C Reid and J Bain came second with 58.6. In third place were S Osborne, I MacPhee and E Wyllie on 59.

The Gala Open was on Sunday and Thurso’s Sandy Sutherland (54) blew the field away with a nett 58 to win the trophy.

Chris Sutherland got off to a great start with a birdie at the first to cement second place, one ahead of Ed Wyllie (8) with a nett 66.

Alison Campbell (21) played steady golf to come in overall fourth with a nett 67 alongside Ronald Mackay, who was fifth. In sixth place was David Nicolson from Lybster with a nett 68 and also the lowest gross of the day with a 71.
