THURSO Bowling Club saw the gent’s section take over the green last Saturday as the Allan Cup Handicap Singles took place.

A relatively poor entry of 21 players went into the draw on what was a rather cold and windy day.

There was a few shock results in the first round with a good showing from all six juniors – Dean McPhee and Sean Fraser saw off the more experienced Johnty Macleod and Douglas Morrison.

Keith Boden dispatched Brian Tewnion and Peter Dymond senior completed the first-round shocks with his 21-18 win over Brian Cormack. Dean found himself up against the consistent John Harris and gave him a good game only losing out 21-18, and Sean lost out in a close encounter with Ian Pickthall 21-17. John then put paid to Ian’s hope of title glory with a 21-10 victory.

Meeting John in the first semi-final was Ronnie Bain who had earlier come through against Ross Cowan and Douglas Fraser. Here John’s run came to an end as Ronnie moved up a gear to secure his place in the final.

Peter Dymond senior’s challenge stalled after his earlier exploits when he met Alan Morrison, who had beaten Peter Dymond junior in the previous round, losing 21-14.

Alan faced Roddy Farmer in the second semi. Roddy, fresh from last week’s win, was playing some excellent bowls again and was looking to further his winning streak but Alan managed to kill off Roddy’s run with a 21-17 result. The final was a bit of an anticlimax as Ronnie hit the ground running and closed out the game 21-8 to become the Allan Cup winner for 2011.

The club has been busy on the Scottish qualifying front with wins for Roddy Farmer in the gents’ singles and Keith Boden’s senior four.

Raffe MacIntyre put up a good show against the much more experienced Duncan Farmer, from Brora, and, after leading for most of the tie, Raffe finally went down 21-14.

The ladies’ section was also in action with the two bowl triples, Joan Elder, Nancy MacAdie and Janet Sinclair, entertaining their Invergordon opponents and, after a ding-dong battle, losing out on the last end of a tie break. Janet did have some success though as she and John Harris got through their first-round tie in the mixed pairs against L. Payne and A. MacKenzie, from Brora. Recent helter-skelter winners were Hugh Irons and Peter Dymond senior.

Tomorrow’s MacIntyre Pairs round robin has been postponed to June 25 due to the poor entry numbers and a helter-skelter will take place at 2pm instead.
