A 12-year-old Tang Soo Do student from Caithness has completed a family treble by achieving a black belt in the Korean martial art.

Robyn Speirs passed a four-hour black belt grading in Inverness earlier this month.

Robyn started her martial art journey with the Caithness Tang Soo Do club in 2018 and did so along with her father Eoghan Speirs as a way to share a hobby together.

It wasn’t long after this that Robyn’s mother Kerry Speirs took up Tang Soo Do and they all started training together, supporting and encouraging each other through the various belt levels.

They have now all gained their black belt – Eoghan in April 2023, Kerry in December 2023 and now Robyn in December 2024.

Club instructor Stephen Mezals (4th Dan) said: “Robyn has been a fantastic student, showing great commitment and dedication, working hard week in, week out, and is well deserving of her black belt. She performed well in the grading and did herself and the club proud.

“Tang Soo Do brings all its practitioners close together, forging great friendships, and we often refer to our Tang Soo Do family. However, it’s even better when we see actual families all share the same love for Tang Soo Do and share their journeys together.

“Having them all achieve black belt is such a great moment for them and the club.”

Caithness Tang Soo Do has now been running for six years. Members train once a week on a Monday evening at the Ross Institute in Halkirk, where there is a junior class for students in primary school and a senior class for adults and also students in secondary school.

Stephen describes it as “a fun and exciting martial art with a lot to offer for people of all ages”.

More information can be found on the club’s Facebook page at Caithness Tang Soo Do.
