Rendall says Scorries are getting ‘better and better’
Owen Rendall admitted his first goal for Wick Academy was “nothing fancy” – but he was happy that it set the Scorries on their way to a hugely impressive victory over Forres Mechanics.
The Scorries put in a tremendous shift on a heavy surface as they ran out 3-1 winners in Saturday’s Highland League encounter at Harmsworth Park.
The 26-year-old Orcadian defender opened the scoring after eight minutes when he bundled the ball over the line after Forres were unable to clear from a Kyle Henderson free kick.
Rendall said: “Marc Macgregor got to the ball ahead of the keeper and just managed to poke it under him. The keeper got a slight touch and kind of stopped it a bit.
“It just needed a bit of a helping hand over the line. It was nothing fancy – just first come, first served.”

Mark Macadie doubled Academy’s lead after 25 minutes with his first goal since returning from injury. Kyle Henderson delivered a cross into the box and Macadie timed his run to perfection as he got in behind the defence and clipped the ball in at the far post.
Seconds later, Henderson tried an audacious long-range shot but Forres keeper Jack Robertson scrambled back and just managed to prevent it crossing the line.
The Scorries extended their lead a minute after the break when Marc Macgregor rolled the ball past Robertson after great link-up play with Henderson.
Substitute Liam Grant reduced the deficit after 65 minutes with a low shot from the left edge of the penalty area.
Academy remain 15th in the table but Saturday’s win moves them further away from the bottom three.
Rendall said: “I would say it has been building for a couple of games now. We’ve been getting better and better.
“We’ve been struggling to convert the chances but today we were pretty clinical, and then we defended well for the rest of the game. Everybody put in a good shift.”
Young players again featured prominently for Academy, with two teenagers in the starting line-up and four coming off the bench.
“A lot of the under-18s are getting their chance and they’re taking it,” Rendall said. “They’re performing well.”
