Reid and Gray hit 41 points in summer league at Thurso

The Newsbeat summer league at Thurso is at round 16 and Cameron Reid (17) continued his fine form with 41 points after recording nine pars.

Stevie Gray (25) also had 41 points. His playing partner Scott Nicol (4) nearly had the perfect round. Nicol had 16 pars and one birdie as he stood on the 18th tee. However, he subsequently bogeyed the 18th for 40 points.

Rory Hadden (15) also had 40 points.

Alan Swanson (2) had birdies at the 10th, 12th and 18th as he came home in two under par for 39 points. Andrew Rathie (15) was next best with 38 points, with Jocky Begg (10), despite bogeying the last four on 36 points.

On Saturday the Tom Adams Trophy was up for grabs. In tricky conditions the winner was Alan Swanson with 71 (2) 69, pipping Andrew Main (8) who also had a nett 69.

Donald Sutherland (8) was third with nett 70. Also on nett 70 were Kyle Reid (28) and David Irvine (19).

The JGC Open was the prize on Sunday and Neil Jackson showed the field a clean pair of heels, winning comfortably after birdies at the sixth, 11th and 13th saw him return 76 (13) 63.

Ian Macphee (12) was the runner-up with nett 68.

Angus Cameron (11) had back-to-back birdies at the 14th and 15th to finish third with nett 69. Jocky Begg (10) and Alan Swanson (2) also had nett 69, with Swanson recording the lowest gross of the day.

There were two dozen EGGs on Tuesday at Thurso Golf Club for the third round of the Summer Eclectic.

Tied for the lead after the opening nine holes were George Sanders and George Mitchell with 21 Stableford points. One point behind was Peter Gilmour, with Jim Telfer and Jack Johnstone a further point in arrears.

Sanders scored at all the inward nine holes for a further 18 points and a winning total of 39. Mitchell scored a single point over the final three holes and fell back into a tie on 35 points with Telfer.

Gilmour was on his own with 33 points one ahead of James Taylor, Jim Buchan, Stuart Bell, Ian Manson, John Morrison and Johnstone. Clark Grant and Alan Simmonite managed 31 points, just ahead of a quartet on the 30-point mark.

Recent ladies’ competitions at Thurso included the July Extra Medal won by Morag Mackay (20) with nett 77. Second spot went to Joy Fraser (36) on nett 80.

This Tuesday the competition was the Kilearnan Trophy played as a greensome. Winners with nett 69 were the pairing of Angela Williamson and Eileen Manson. Runners-up were Barbara McLeod and Jean Clasper with a nett 71.
