PICTURES: Treble triumphs for Sophie and Chloe in Highland tournament

Highland Badminton Group held its annual under-13 and under-17 tournament on Sunday at Inverness Leisure, with players from all over Scotland competing. A total of 45 players entered across the two age groups.

Three Highland area players secured the treble, two of them from Caithness – in the U13s Sophie Mackay and in the U17s Chloe Mackenzie, along with mixed partner Callum McWhirter (Elgin).

The U13 boys' singles was a knockout format with consolation.

In a hard-fought final, number one seed Aarav Sinha (Aberdeen) won 21-18, 21-17 against Kanishk Tata (Aberdeen).

The consolation final was between Ethan Wilby (Dingwall) and Liam Sinclair (Caithness), with Liam winning 21-9.

The girls' singles followed the same format.

Number one seed Sophie Mackay won 21-15, 21-19 in the final against Josie Columbine (Black Isle).

The consolation was between Lochcarron’s Maura Mackenzie and Sophie Sinclair (Caithness), with Maura winning 21-16.

The U13 level doubles competition was played in a round-robin format.

Boys' winners were Aayush Nagdeve and Aarav Sinha (both Aberdeen), who didn't lose a game,

Runners-up were Atharv Sharma (West of Scotland group) and Liam Sinclair, winning three out of four.

Girls' winners were Sophie Mackay and Myah Macleod (both Caithness), who won all their games.

Runners-up, winning two out of three, were Caithness duo Sophie Sinclair and Lexie Mackenzie.

The mixed doubles saw a return to the knockout with consolation format.

The final saw number one seeds Sophie Mackay and Liam Sinclair win the first set 21-17 against Atharv Sharma and Josie Columbine then lose the second 14-21, leading to a nail-biting third set which Sophie and Liam won 24-22.

The consolation final was between Inverness’s Magnus Henderson and Lella Fernandes and Black Isle's Conor Gallacher and Madeleine Weir, with Conor and Madeleine winning 21-15.

The U17 boys' singles followed the same format as the U13s.

In the final, Callum McWhirter had a 21-9, 21-3 victory over Skye’s Calum Mackenzie.

In the consolation final, Adam Ringstead (Benbecula) lost out 21-14 to William Sendall (Black Isle).

The girls' singles followed the same format.

Chloe Mackenzie triumphed 21-14, 17-21, 21-2 in the final against number one seed Thenoo Annamalai (Glasgow).

The consolation final was between Moray’s Sophie Howard and Kaiya Wilkes, with Sophie winning 21-6.

The boys’ doubles was played as a round-robin with Callum McWhirter and William Sendall not dropping a set as they won all four games.

Runners-up were Aberdeen’s Aditya Nagdeve and Aayush Sinha who won three out of their four matches.

The girls’ doubles saw a straight final between Chloe Mackenzie and Ava Cook (both Caithness) against Chloe Begg (Caithness) and Moray’s Kaiya Wilkes. Chloe and Ava took the win 21-4, 21-9.

The mixed doubles saw a round-robin format and number one seeds Chloe Mackenzie and Callum McWhirter won all their games convincingly, dropping only 14 points over the six sets played.

Runners-up were Ava Cook and William Sendall, winning two out of three.
