PENTLAND United will be looking to banish their league-title blues by winning the Highland Amateur Cup tomorrow.

The Dunnet men face Shetland side Lerwick Spurs at Wick’s Harmsworth Park, looking to make amends at losing the championship to Wick Groats earlier this week.

United have won seven out of eight finals – their last coming in 2010.

However, they face a tough task with Lerwick Spurs being classed as the favourites given they knocked out last year’s winners, Avoch, in the semis.

Co-manager Michael Gray recognises this but is confident United can rise to the challenge.

He said: “We’re aware of the task that faces us but there is nothing bigger than this as far as the Highland and Islands teams are concerned.

“When the draw for the first round is made, it’s the game that all of us look forward to. We’ve got to the final and, despite what happened to us in the league, we’ll be giving it our absolute best.

“I’m aware that Lerwick are being tipped to win it. I can see why, as they’re a good footballing team who play their wingers high up the park and move the ball around well.”

Spurs manager Davy MacDonald said: “We’re really excited about the final and can’t wait for Saturday.

“We’ve had a tough run and beaten some good sides. The travelling doesn’t bother us. It has only served to help the boys build up a good team spirit and that has worked well for us.”
