The courses, set amongst the Lomond Hills, were scenic but not for the faint-hearted given the continually undulating nature of the tracks and trails, with a couple of steep climbs thrown in for good measure.

The Dunnetts, competing in the under-20 event, raced as part of the senior women’s 10K competition. The championships took place in temperatures of 19 degrees Celsius which challenged the runners further.

With a very impressive 11th place overall in the women’s race, Oonagh pulled off the gutsiest run of the season to take the national under-20 title. Emma, who had been running just in front of Oonagh in the opening three kilometres, struggled with the conditions but pushed on to take 18th overall and third in the under-20s.

Both juniors were competing for Edinburgh AC whose ladies team took gold.

Graeme Taylor from Thurso, also competing for the capital team, was 15th in the senior men’s race and was in the Edinburgh men’s team which finished second to collect his first national medal.

Emma and Oonagh secured places in the Scottish team for the Karrimor Trail International in Keswick in two weeks, a fixture that Emma finished sixth in last year. However, it looks likely that the pair will not take up their opportunity to compete for Scotland this time due to a clash of events.
