North of Scotland under-18s narrowly lost out in their opening Caledonia Youth Cup rugby tie versus Ellon at Millbank on Saturday.

Eight from Caithness joined forces with players from Orkney and Ross Sutherland for the match.

The composite side opened the scoring but trailed 12-7 at the break and the visitors were never headed again as they prevailed 27-24.

The narrow margin of defeat and their four tries earned the North two bonus points. Caithness duo Kyle Leavesley (prop) and Will Oag (scrum-half) each chipped in with a try.

Their second match in their group is against Highland in Kirkwall on Saturday.
