Morven and Owen enjoy treble taste of success

First up was the under-13 competition when 44 children took part in an event which featured some really good games, many being hard-fought and going right to the wire.

The boys’ singles final saw an excellent game between Kieran Ross and Ross Gunn. The former came through to take the title 21-6, though the score failed to reflect a tight game with lots of excellent rallies.

The girls’ singles final was another good game between Morven Coghill and Megan Mackay, with the slightly stronger Morven prevailing 21-15. They paired up in the doubles to take the title against Carly Sinclair and Chloe Dunnett 21-12.

The boys’ doubles final was possibly the best game of the day with brothers Craig and Paul Stewart pulling out all the stops and playing some of the best badminton of the competition against Kieran Ross & Ross Bain. It was a thrilling game with Paul & Craig coming out on top 21-19.

The mixed doubles saw brother and sister Hannah and Craig Kennedy from Dunnet team up and play against Morven Coghill and Craig Stewart. In another excellent final, the latter powered to a 21-14 victory, giving Morven the treble and Craig a double success.

Day two was the under-15 competition, with 31 people taking part in an event which again had a clutch of close contests, many of which went to three games. The boys’ singles final saw Owen Christie and Ryan Campbell have a battle royale with long hard fought rallies and great court coverage from both youngsters. Owen came through to take the title 15-10,13-15,15-9.

The girls’ singles final between Erin Cormack and Stacey Webster also went the distance with Stacey winning 15-7, 7-15, 15-13.

The boys’ doubles saw Owen Christie and Ryan Campbell take on Thurso’s Euan Grant and Craig Chambers. The latter bravely battled back in the second game but the on-form Wick duo came through 15-3, 15-13.

The girls’ doubles was the same story, with Stacey Webster and Erin Cormack just too strong for Loryn Duffus and Katie Coghill.

The mixed doubles was definitely the match of the day with Owen Christie and Erin Cormack featuring in an epic against Ryan Campbell and Katie Coghill, battling back from losing the opener to win 16-18, 16-14, 16-14. That completed Owen’s treble, with Erin and Stacey each claiming a double.

The final day saw 11 boys and eight girls take part in the under-17 competition. What the entry lacked in numbers, it made up for in the general quality of play.

The boys’ singles semi-finals proved a riveting spectacle. The first was a cracking contest between Michael Stone and Martin Nicolson which the latter eventually won 21-16,14-21, 21-16. The second semi saw under-15 treble winner Owen Christie give Matthew Sinclair a real run for his money with Matthew having to dig deep before securing his place in the final with a 21-19, 21-14 victory.

The final was another thriller in which Matthew had match point twice but had to settle for runner-up after being edged out by Martin 21-17, 15-21, 26-24.

The girls’ singles saw reigning singles champ Katie Cunningham take on Shannon Mackenzie. It proved another really good game, with the girls going for everything and Katie just having the edge to come through 21-11, 21-12.

The boys’ doubles saw Kyle Tait and Michael Stone pull out all the stops in their semi against Adrian McColl and Rory MacDougall to secure their place in the final with a 21-15, 17-21, 21-11 win.

In the final, defending champions Martin Nicolson and Matthew Sinclair powered their way to victory over Kyle and Michael 21-16, 21-12.

The girls’ doubles final saw Lybster partnership Chelsea Lightley and Christie Ross push Katie Cunningham & Stacey Webster all the way, only for the latter pair to win 15-21, 21-16, 21-14.

The last match saw Martin Nicolson and Katie Cunningham both hoping to complete trebles against the scratch pairing of Wick’s Shannon Mackenzie and Thurso’s Kyle Tait in the final. Shannon and Kyle gelled and worked really well together in a game which featured excellent serving, great court coverage and lots of good rallies, A delighted Shannon & Kyle secured a 21-17, 21-16 victory. Martin and Katie had to be satisfied with their efforts throughout the day which landed each of them two titles.
