A Caithness amateur football club has received a massive financial boost in the form of an £18,000 grant from Foundation Scotland.

Watten Football Club, who compete in Division 2 of the Caithness AFA, say the funding award represents a “huge step forward” after a months-long application process.

In an announcement on Facebook, the club confirmed that the award will be used to purchase a sit-on mower to help maintain their pitch, cover key running costs and pay for new kit and equipment for players and coaches.

Team manager Scott Bremner hailed the efforts of the club committee in securing the award.

“It’s brilliant for the club. This funding will go a long way in helping us build a solid foundation for the future,” he said.

“A new club committee was formed around January, and one of our main priorities was to explore how we could financially support the club and meet the ongoing costs of running in the league.

“The committee has been fantastic, coming up with funding ideas and encouraging greater community involvement.

“We've organised local events such as pub quizzes and even had players help with community litter picks around Watten.

“Securing this £18,000 grant from Foundation Scotland has been a process that’s taken four to five months, involving a great deal of planning and preparation,” he said.

“A huge thanks must go to Alix Sutherland, our Community Development Officer, who has been a vital point of contact throughout.

“Alix has supported the club for several years, especially with funding applications and providing guidance.

“We’re also very grateful to Eilidh Coll from Foundation Scotland, whose support and advice have been invaluable in helping us navigate this process.”

Bremner confirmed that the money would be put to immediate use improving the club’s facilities.

“The funding will primarily go towards purchasing a new lawn mower and essential equipment to help us maintain the Watten pitch and surrounding park area.”

The development marks the beginning of a longer-term ambition to transfer ownership of their pavilion in Watten to the club.

“Looking ahead, we have even bigger ambitions – including the long-term goal of purchasing the Watten Pavilion from High Life Highland,” he said.

“We also plan to use part of the funding to support our players and coaching team with new equipment, tracksuits, and other essentials.

“Right now, morale at the club is high. We have a great young team with real determination, and this funding is a huge step forward as we work to bring success to the village.”

Watten currently sit fourth in the Division 2 table after three matches played.
