THURSO Bowling Club’s pairs title was decided last Saturday when 26 players went into the hat for the 9am draw.

Some strong pairings were drawn but some didn’t reach beyond the first round.

Judy Mowat and Douglas Fraser, who are mixed pairs partners, moved into the semi-finals with a convincing win over Jessie Meiklejohn and Johnny MacKay.

Their opposition would be Joan Bridge and Lorna McDermid, who had two comfortable results in the earlier rounds and looked like carrying on in that manner when they built up an early lead over Douglas and Judy. But their early form ran out and their opponents claimed five of the last six ends for a two-shot victory.

Marjorie McDermid and Brian Tewnion just edged a very tight match with Betty MacDonald and Danny Hitchin. Going into the last end three shots down, Brian, with the last bowl of the game, played a plant onto one of Betty’s bowls to pick up a four and nick the match by a single shot.

Making lighter work of their quarter-final were Tommy Woods and Peter Dymond snr who cruised past Julie Knapp and Kevin Sinclair and then duly dispatched Marjorie and Brian in the semi.

The final saw some of the best bowls of the day and, after 11 ends, Judy and Douglas held a one-shot lead over Tommy and Peter. The next three ends were decisive with Judy and Douglas picking up three shots on each to lift the club pairs trophy by 10 shots.

This week sees the men’s Scottish district ties kick off with Thurso’s singles, pairs, triples and two senior fours out in action.

Ross Cowan had another good showing in the Northern Counties team when they faced Angus at Kirriemuir and only just failed to record their first win when they lost out by two shots.

Tomorrow will see the men’s section taking over the green when the gents’ Allan Cup handicapped singles take place. Players are reminded to report to the green by 9am for the draw.
