FC RETRO pulled off the shock of the round when they knocked top-flight Lybster out of the Eain Mackintosh Cup.

The Division Two side travelled to Cow Park hoping to cause an upset and that they did thanks to a dramatic 3-2 victory.

Tony Miller gave Retro the lead before a double from Bobby Gunn looked to have booked Lybster their passage into the last eight.

However, late strikes from Jack Steven and Miller again pulled off an upset for Retro.

FC Retro will now play High Ormlie Hotspur at home in the quarter-finals.

A delighted spokesman Alan Steven said: “It’s always hard to play a Division One side – especially on their own ground – but it was a decent game and a fantastic result for us. We were not expected to beat a top-flight team.

“Admittedly they had a few boys unavailable but they were still a tough side to play against.

“We went 1-0 up with a fantastic goal by Tony. He dribbled past two defenders and fired in a beauty into the top corner.

“Lybster came back and I thought that was it when they went 2-1 up with 15 minutes to play. But then Jack headed in an equaliser before Tony grabbed a dramatic winner three minutes from the end.”

Thurso Swifts are through to the last eight following a 3-1 home victory against Halkirk.

Player/manager Nigel Mackenzie opened the scoring and Murray Mackay added another. David Blackwood pulled one back for Halkirk before Craig Ross sealed the win.

Swifts now face a difficult trip to Wick Groats. Mackenzie said: “It was good to get back to winning ways. The boys played well and we’re pleased to be in the next round – even though we do appear to have got the toughest draw.

“But you have to meet sides like that in order to win trophies so the quarter-finals is as good a time as any.”

Staxigoe United advanced to the last eight with a comfortable 3-0 win at second division Wick Thistle. Martin Banks, Marc Coghill and Danny Coghill were on target for United who now face an away tie to John O’Groats.

Staxigoe boss Andrew Banks said: “It was quite tight for the first half-hour until we got the opening goal and the Wick Thistle guys seemed to let their heads drop.

“Marc’s goal was a bit special as he rarely gets into the opposition box, let alone score.

“We’ve John O’Groats next and although league position probably has us as favourites, on paper, they’ve got a very good team.”

John O’Groats progressed as Francis Street Club were unable to raise a team.

Wick Groats beat Pentland United 2-0 thanks to goals from Alan Hughes and Sandy Sutherland.
