CAITHNESS Rugby Club has been boosted with the return to the county of Tommy McGee – who has enjoyed a successful playing and coaching career in Scotland and England.

McGee, (36) who won a Scotland A cap, has already led a couple of Greens training sessions and is toying with the idea of getting his boots out and making himself available as a player.

The former Thurso High School pupil turned out for Caithness before moving to Edinburgh, where he enjoyed a successful career as a prop for Boroughmuir, winning top-flight league and cup titles.

He represented Scottish and UK students at rugby league before launching his professional playing career with the now-defunct Border Reivers.

McGee in 2008 won a late call-up to the Scotland A ranks for the Churchill Cup tourney in Canada by when he had joined Leeds Carnegie and helped win them promotion to the English Premiership.

He played four seasons for the club, now called Yorkshire Carnegie, with whom he also had a year as head coach. For the past year he has been coaching National League 1 side Wharfedale.

His return to the far north has delighted Caithness coach Russell Mill.

He said: “Tommy is a seasoned professional coach and he’s made an immediate impact in the couple of sessions he has been at so far.

“It’s a big bonus for the club that we’ve got someone of his calibre involved.”

McGee has moved back to his home county to work as operations manager at the new seaweed factory in Wick.
