Sunday saw a short series of three races to determine the 2021 winner of Pentland Firth Yacht Club's Thurso Town Improvements Cup.

Conditions were ideal with a fresh breeze from the north which generated a substantial swell but glimpses of the sun made the cool conditions acceptable.

The course was laid by Dave Lord and Kyle Oag in the club rescue boat and six boats took part. These were the Lasers of Martin Lord, Marjory Lord and Liam King and the Toppers of Ian Grant, Thomas McAlonan and a visitor for the day from Perth, Jacob McCauley.

The first race saw the Laser of Liam King out in front from the start but Marjory Lord was in hot pursuit and managed to take the lead only to misread the wind at one of the buoys, allowing Liam to retake the lead and win race one.

The second race saw Marjory Lord out in front and there she stayed despite every attempt to catch her by the others.

Liam King ended up second but only by a couple of seconds (after handicaps were applied) ahead of Thomas McAlonan in third place.

With one win and one second place each for Liam and Marjory, everything depended on the final race and it was Marjory Lord who led from the start to finish to take the cup.

The afternoon was enjoyed by all and the visitor from Perth found the conditions very different from the sheltered waters of the River Tay where he normally sails.

July 25 had seen the final races of the club summer series. The series result was a tie on points between Marjory Lord and Liam King – but Liam was declared the winner as he had one more first place than Marjory.

The club is always looking for new members. Anyone who has an interest in sailing, or would like to become involved, is asked to contact pentlandfirthyc@gmail.com
