GARY Manson received a presentation to mark his 600th competitive appearance for Wick Academy – although he wasn’t in the mood to celebrate the achievement in the aftermath of Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Deveronvale.

“That game won’t last long in the memory,” the 34-year-old said as Academy’s run of convincing victories came to an abrupt halt at Harmsworth Park.

Manson does have a clear recollection of his first match for the club, though – when he was 16.

“It was here against Cove Rangers, it was the first game of the season in 2000 and we beat them 1-0. It was a memorable debut,” he said.

Manson was the supporters’ player of the year last season and has scored 43 goals for the club. “If I can get to 50 before I finish I’ll be happy,” he said.

Manson, an assistant project manager at Dounreay, may be edging towards the twilight of his Highland League career but he is not looking to call it a day quite yet. “I just take it year by year,” he said. “I’ll see if I’m still enjoying it and have still got the desire. I still think I’m fit enough and contributing enough to the team every week.”
