Wick Wheelers’ annual 10-mile time trials got under way earlier this month but due to strong winds the first event of the year, traditionally a 2up, had to be postponed.

April 11 saw the first individual time trial which had a field of nine riders who were delighted with the favourable light winds. Opening honours went to Andrew MacLeod (CCC) for the fastest time of the evening with a very commendable 21 min 54 sec, missing the course record by a few seconds. Iain Nicolson was the fastest Wheeler of the evening with a strong performance.

Results: 1 Andrew MacLeod, 21.54; 2 Iain Nicolson, 23.48; 3 Andrew Richard, 26.10; 4 Angus Henry, 26.55; 5 Danny Miller, 27.13; 6 Charlie Mackay, 28.22; 7 George Ewing, 29.15; 8 Graeme Clyne, 29.21; 9 James Munro, 32.22.

April 18 saw 12 riders taking part in the 10-mile time trial and again Andrew MacLeod took first place but with a slower time due to the strong easterly wind.

Stuart Anderson was the first Wheeler home with a respectable 24:19. Angus Henry, Graeme Clyne and George Ewing were the only riders to improve their times from the previous week.

Yvonne Richard and Chelsea Durrand, the first ladies to take part this year, were separated by only nine seconds.

Results: 1 Andrew MacLeod, 22.01; 2 Alan Shearer, 24.19; 3 Stuart Anerson, 24.20; 4 Angus Henry, 25.19; 5 Andrew Richard, 26.17; 6 Graeme Clyne, 27.43; 7 Danny Miller, 28.18; 8 Charlie Mackay, 28.49; 9 George Ewing, 29.06; 10 Yvonne Richard, 30.18; 11 Chelsea Durrand, 30.27; 12 James Munro, 33.15.

The 10-mile time trials are held each Thursday evening, starting at 7pm from Thurso Road, Wick, near the caravan site. The event is open to anyone who wishes to come along, although you must be over 12.

A helmet must be worn and a flashing red light to the rear of your bike is recommended. All abilities are welcome. If you don’t fancy a time trial and would like to just try a run on the bike, go along to one of the club’s training nights – details can be found on Facebook.

Caithness Cycling Club’s second event of the season was again on the 11-mile Loch Calder circuit but conditions were even tougher than for week one, with winds of 20 to 34mph and a temperature of only 6C.

As a result everyone was slower but winner Andrew MacLeod, Gary Angus and Robert MacGregor all did particularly well to limit their deficits to less than 20 seconds.

Former member Allan Shearer took a fine second place, ahead of Hamish McAllan and Colin Earnshaw, while newcomer Kerryn Sievewright could hardly have had a harder event for his first time trial.

Results: 1 Andrew MacLeod, 27.12; 2 Allan Shearer, 30.52; 3 Hamish McAllan, 32.05; 4 Colin Earnshaw, 33.36; 5 David Stockan, 34.49; 6 Alistair Miller, 35.17; 7 Adam Smith, 36.04, 8 Debbie Larnach, 36.50; 9 Kenny MacGruer, 37.01; 10 Sandy Christie, 37.27; 11 Gary Angus, 38.03; 12 Phil Cartwright, 38.35; 13 Roger Broughton, 38.39; 14 John Falconer, 39.52; 15 Robert MacGregor, 42.52; 16 Kerryn Sievewright, 43.56.
