Player/co-manager Rob McLean said it was "a fantastic day" for High Ormlie Hotspur as they reached the last 16 of the Highland Amateur Cup with a 4-1 home victory over Lochinver.

James Mackintosh scored twice for the Caithness AFA outfit against their North-West Sutherland league opponents as the warm sunshine made for testing conditions at Morrison Park in Halkirk on Saturday.

Mackintosh gave Spurs the lead midway through the first half. The visitors punished some slack organisation at the back to equalise, but William Cannop struck almost immediately to put High Ormlie back in front.

Hotspur started the second half strongly and extended their advantage through an Aidan Reid header. Mackintosh went on to add his second of the afternoon.

McLean said: "It was a fantastic day for the club in scorching conditions at times.

"Our squad continues to improve as more experienced boys come back from university, so I'm really happy with where the team are at the minute.

"We played some really nice stuff and thoroughly deserved the result. Our boys were very patient and moved the ball very effectively."

Spurs' next opponents will be Iochdar Saints at a venue to be confirmed. The South Uist team were 4-0 winners over Watten at Bught Park in Inverness.

Watten were the only Caithness side to lose in Saturday's second-round ties, with five teams from the county – more than from any other area of the Highlands and Islands – progressing to the last 16 of the competition on June 25.

Third-round draw: Avoch v Kirkwall Hotspurs; Black Rock Rovers v Golspie Stafford; Iochdar Saints v High Ormlie Hotspur (venue to be confirmed); IRN Security v Sleat and Strath; Pentland United v Lairg Rovers; Ness v Carloway; Stromness Athletic v Wick Thistle; Wick Groats v Staxigoe United (ties to be played on Saturday, June 25).
