THE second year of the Willie McDonald mixed triples at Thurso Bowling Club again attracted the maximum entry of 24 teams with the travelling contingent including representatives from Orkney and Brora.

Group One of the round-robin stage was headed by Ronnie Bain, Dar Sutherland and Marie Mackay, who became the first team to win all of their group matches.

Two teams finished on six points from three wins each, with Derek Rhodes, Linda Morrison and Liz Rhodes claiming second spot due to a plus 20 shot difference, ahead of Stan Fraser, Di Sutherland and John Cullop (Lybster), who finished on plus 16.

The outcome in Group Two went down to the last bowl when an ill-advised attempted draw from Angie MacKenzie (Brora) took his team back to a tie and a six point total with a plus eight shot dfference. This left them third behind John Grant, Eileen Perry and Marshall Bowman (Lybster), who were on plus 16, and Colin Parker, Keith McGlinchie and Annie Greig (St Margaret’s Hope), on plus 11.

The Orkney trio took full advanatge of their surprise second spot to score a comprehensive win over Ronnie Bain’s team in the semi-final while John Grant & Co came back from three down to score a four on the last end to snatch a win over Derek Rhodes’

trio.

Unfortunately, the competition ended in something of an anti-climax when the Orkney trio had to withdraw from the final as a result of travel problems, leaving John, Eileen and Marshall as winners.
