ALONG with their winning ladies’ rink of Liz Rhodes, Joan Elder, Betty MacDonald and Judy Mowat – as reported in Friday’s John O’Groat Journal – Thurso Bowling Club had representatives in another two sections at the Scottish championships staged in Ayr.

Janet Sinclair was in the singles and Tommy Woods, Ricky McMahon, Dar Sutherland and Nigel Gower were in the senior fours.

Janet had no favours in the draw when she found herself facing Lynne Stein, Scotland’s top skip in the recent home internationals.

Janet played well but found Lynne too strong and her challenge ended with a 21-11 defeat.

The senior rink also came unstuck in the first round, losing 20-10 against Fife’s Windygates club.

Meanwhile, Thurso have won the P&O Trophy for the first time in six years when they defeated Orkney in their annual challenge match.

Thurso held a 21-shot overnight lead and increased this to claim back the trophy which Orkney have been dominant in over the last few years.

Thurso recently held its single sets competition with 23 players competing. This format usually makes for some close and exciting games and this year was no exception with a few matches being decided on tie-breaks.

The first semi-final was a father-son affair with Alan Morrison getting the better of his dad, Douglas, by two sets to nil, 6-2 and 6-3.

The second semi was contested between two ladies with Lorna McDermid claiming the first set against Cath Irons 10-1, but Cath made Lorna fight all the way in the second set with Lorna just holding Cath off for a 7-5 win.

Lorna claimed the first set of the final 9-6 but back came Alan in the second to take the game to a tie-break with an 8-3 result.

The tie-break is played over three ends with all shots counting and it was Lorna who took advantage, winning 6-0 to wrap up the single sets title.
