Thurso schoolboy Andrew Sutherland managed to break a lap record when he competed in round two of the Motorsport UK British Kart Championships.

Eleven-year-old Andrew was entered in the highly competitive Honda Cadet class at the event hosted by West of Scotland Kart Club at its Larkhall circuit in Lanarkshire.

Conditions were scorching hot at the three-day event, making for perfect racing conditions.

Andrew qualified in second place and the race was there for all as the top seven karts were separated by a mere 0.4 seconds.

In the final, the front two drivers managed to pull away as the pack were squabbling for position. Sutherland took the lead for seven laps – then, with one lap to go, Ed Spain, from Tadley in Hampshire, managed to slip through for the win by 0.08 seconds.

Andrew was ecstatic with the second-place finish and, in doing so, he broke the lap record in a time of 56.79 seconds. The commentators also awarded him the “Privateer of the Event” award for maintaining a high karting level throughout the weekend.

Third place went to Archie Loveridge from Ledbury, Herefordshire.

The Honda Cadet class is for karters aged from eight to 12 years.
