Caithness Krakens suffered a chastening 87-0 defeat at the hands of Shetland Valkyries in Lerwick on Saturday.

The visitors ran into opponents who ruthlessly exploited just about every opportunity that came their way.

The first meeting between the sides in the Caley North Region Women's League will be memorable for all the wrong reasons for Mike Flavell's team.

The 16-strong Krakens motored south on Friday evening before flying from Inverness on the morning of the match at North Lochside.

Flavell said his squad continues to be blighted by absentees, which has necessitated a clutch of players being fielded out of position.

"Shetland were a very fit, athletic side who punished us just about every time we made a mistake," he said. "They were very clinical in taking their chances."

He praised his side for battling to the end and never giving up.

Lara Campbell ended up needing hospital treatment for a finger ligament injury.

Valkyries captain Charis Scott set a club (and possibly a league) record with her haul of 57 points from seven tries and 11 conversions.

The Krakens' next outing is away to Peterhead on November 5.

Inverness Craig Dunain stay top of the table after edging to a 7-0 home victory over Aberdeenshire Quines.

Caithness men's 2nd XV made do with a 30-minute run-out against the combined Caithness/Orkney veterans at Millbank on Saturday after their scheduled Caley North 3 clash with Turriff was spiked as the north-east side could not raise a squad to travel.

Turriff have been deducted three points and the game is rearranged for December 17.

The Yellows are due to play Craig Dunain at Millbank on Saturday. Kick-off is at 3pm.
