Caithness Krakens went down 46-7 on Saturday in their away encounter with Aberdeen Quines in the Women's Caledonia North Region League.

A dearth of backs once again affected Mike Flavell's outfit as they battled to adapt to a clutch of players fielded out of position.

"We had our number eight playing 10 and another back-row player playing 15," Flavell explained.

"We've been struggling a bit this season being without a handful of key backs, out through injury and unavailability."

He said: "Quines were a good team – they have a big, physical pack who regularly got them across the gain-line.

"But we forced them to run around us rather than through us."

The Krakens' try came midway through the first half when scrum-half Megan Douglas's snipe and offload sent emergency stand-off Ellie Anderson over. Douglas added the extras.

Turning round 7-26 down, the visitors competed better in the second half until a collective late fade-out allowed the Quines to extend their advantage.

The Krakens next play Orkney Dragons on October 8.

Caithness men's 2nd XV face the high-flying Kinloss Eagles at Millbank on Saturday. Kick-off is at 3pm.

Eagles were 70-5 winners at home to Turriff at the weekend. Garioch also had a convincing victory, 49-0 away to Aberdeenshire 2nd XV.

Highland 3rd XV had a 40-39 success against Craig Dunain, while Dyce beat Aberdeen University Medics 17-10.
