Caithness Krakens finally broke their duck on Saturday, earning their first victory on the pitch in the North Caledonia Regional Women’s League.

The 34–0 win at Fraserburgh followed a run of encouraging displays in defeat.

Mike Flavell’s 17-strong squad was boosted by the inclusion of exiles, Dundee-based Stephanie Craig and Edinburgh-based Lorna Murdoch, and Dundee guest Rhea Work.

“We were delighted to get the win,” said Flavell.

“Several of our players made a big effort to get childcare so they could go on the trip so it was particularly deserved for them.”

Fraserburgh suffered a series of injuries which meant most of the second half was played 13-a-side and with uncontested scrums.

Flavell said: “Physically, they weren’t particularly strong but they were very competitive at the breakdown.

“It was a pretty scrappy game but we played some good rugby.

“We were just 10–0 up at half time and they came close to our lines a few times without putting a huge amount of pressure on us.

“Our defence was pretty solid and we made a lot of line breaks and should probably have scored a few more tries than we did.”

Winger Work ran in three tries, back rower Craig grabbed two while Helen Richard, who played scrum half, got the other.

Conversions were added by Carly Erridge and Murdoch.

The Krakens next play on Saturday versus Peterhead at Millbank. Kick-off is at 2pm.

Caithness men’s Seconds went down 34–12 to Craig Dunain at Canal Park last Saturday.

Russell Mill and Sinclair Bremner crossed for Caithness, with Jamie Mowat adding a conversion.

Next up for the Seconds is an away day at high-flying Kinloss Eagles tomorrow afternoon.
