Caithness Krakens are relieved that they are at home in their two outstanding fixtures in the North Regional Women’s League, starting with Saturday’s return joust versus Shetland Valkyries.

They have clocked up 2100 miles in six trips, including forays to Orkney and Shetland.

Coach Mike Flavell said it has been a demanding schedule for a side playing their second season of competitive rugby.

The Krakens suffered their heaviest ever defeat at the end of October, going down 87-0 to the islanders in Lerwick.

Saturday is the final game for Caithness in 2022 and they will be due to return to action on Saturday, January 1.

The Valkyries will travel eyeing another bonus point victory to maintain their pursuit of league leaders Inverness Craig Dunain.

Flavell will be looking to his troops to maintain the momentum built up in their two latest matches – a gutsy 31-7 defeat away to Craig Dunain and a 34-0 win in Fraserburgh.

Being idle last Saturday allowed a few niggling injuries to clear up and the coach is hoping to name a 22-strong squad for the clash, which will be subject to a pitch inspection.

It is due to kick off at 12.30pm.

The Valkyries survived a late rally against Orkney Dragons to secure a 21-17 win in Kirkwall on Saturday.

Aberdeen Quines meanwhile kept up their title hopes with a 80-9 win over Fraserburgh in a double-header in Garioch.

Elsewhere in North Region League One on Saturday, Peterhead are set to take on Aberdeenshire Quines.

The final league fixture of 2022 takes place next weekend when Inverness Craig Dunain are scheduled to face Peterhead.
