THE second county championship of 2012, the singles, was held at Thurso Bowling Club on Sunday with each of the county’s clubs having two representatives.

Brian Cormack (Thurso) quickly defeated his first-round opponent Jim McWirr (Rosebank) with other straightforward wins for Perry Mackenzie (St Fergus) over Gordon Campbell (Lybster), and Janet Sinclair (Thurso) who, after an indifferent start, recovered to beat Terry Candeland (Rosebank).

The best first-round match saw Graham Bain (St Fergus) beat Stan Fraser (Lybster) in a game much closer than the 21-12 scoreline suggests.

The semi-final draw brought two Thurso v St Fergus match-ups and Cormack continued his impressive form with another win in 11 ends to defeat Mackenzie.

The Sinclair v Bain tie saw the former establish an early lead, going 16-7 ahead before Bain hit back to close to 16-13. Threes were then exchanged before a couple of singles saw Sinclair home 21-16 to set up an all-Thurso final.

Cormack had raced to commanding leads in his previous rounds but was on the receiving end in the final as Sinclair immediately found the rink and was soon leading 16-2. A fightback to 17-8 was the best he could manage before a couple of twos saw Sinclair win to become county singles champion for a remarkable fourth time.
