Jack Harcus was chosen as the winner of the Liam Henderson Memorial Cup for the overall player of the year.

He won the treble in the under-17 event as well as winning the club league and was the club’s overall mixed and level doubles champion, which he won with partners Emma Plowman and James Falconer.

Katie Cunningham finished up as the overall ladies singles’ champion for the third year running and also won the overall doubles title with Emma, giving both girls the double win.

Under-15 player Owen Christie picked up the title for overall boys singles.

The presentation of trophies took place in the Norseman Hotel on March 20 with former club champion Kris Hamilton taking time out from his busy schedule at Hamilton Optimum Training to present the trophies.

The competition started on the Saturday with the under-11 and 13 championships. The under-11 stars were Ross Mackay who won the treble and Chloe O’Neill who triumphed in the singles and mixed.

Many in this age group have only been playing a few months and this was their first competition. The standard was very good with all the players upping their game by trying a variety of shots and moving well around the court.

Good performances also came from Mark Macadie, Michael Steven, Connor Macallan, Owen Mathieson, Abby Munro and Iona Fleming.

In the under-13s, there were a lot of upsets with the top seeds getting knocked out. The best match was between Steven Rollo and Kieran Ross, with number one seed Kieran being pushed all the way but Steven just having the edge and coming through to secure his place in the final against Craig Stewart.

This proved another excellent game but Steven had given everything in the semi so had to settle for runner-up with Craig proving too strong for him.

Craig went on to win the doubles, teaming up with brother Paul to beat Kieran Ross and Robbie Gunn in the final.

The girls’ singles final saw another close battle between Morven Coghill and Carly Sinclair, with the contest going right to the wire before a delighted Carly came through to win her first singles title 22/20.

The girls’ doubles saw evenly matched pairings, making it a really good competition. Everyone had to fight hard to get to the next round. Carly Sinclair and Chloe Dunnett took on Morven Coghill and Nishtha Gupta in the final but the latter pair had to settle for runner-up, just losing 23/25.

The mixed doubles saw Kieran Ross and Nishta Gupta take on Ross Gunn and Chloe Dunnett. The latter, who try to play a more tactical game, pushed their opponents all the way but Kieran and Nishtha’s power and their good net coverage took them to victory 21/18.

In the under-15s, Owen Christie and Stacey Webster were the dominant forces, each winning their respective singles and doubles titles with partners Ryan Campbell and Robyn Aitkenhead.

The boys’ singles final saw a marathon match between Owen and Ryan, with the latter pushing Owen all the way. After the tough three-setter he had in the semi against Aiden Young, Ryan ran out of steam at the end and had to settle for second spot.

In the girls’ singles, Katie Coghill and Robyn Aitkenhead had a cracking semi-final, with Katie coming through to face number one seed Stacey in the final. Another good game saw Stacey prove too strong to win in straight sets.

The doubles saw excellent games from the first round to the final. The best match was the mixed doubles final which pitted Katie Coghill & Sean Campbell against Owen Christie & Robyn Aitkenhead. In a thrilling three-setter, Katie & Sean took the title. Other notable performances in this section came from Aiden Young, Jaimie Green, Ryan Edwards and Myles Geronimo.

The under-17 competition was played on a round robin basis due to numbers being low as many of the players now work at the weekends. The standard was still high and there were some thrilling games, with many requiring a third set.

Throughout the competition, the sportsmanship and how the players conducted themselves on and off the court was exemplary.
