Castletown driver Jack Ryan had to settle for third place in last weekend's Junior 1000 Ecosse competition in Fife.

Jack and his navigator Robin Nicolson were among 14 crews in the Summer Stages Junior Rally at Crail airfield, round three of the annual championship for drivers aged 14-17.

Six stages made up the day in glorious dry conditions.

Oliver Phillips and Barry Young achieved their second win of the season after taking a massive 17 seconds out of the rest of the field on stage one. The Citigo crew had a 23-second margin at the finish.

Rian Walker and Stuart McBride (Citigo) started with an uncharacteristic mistake, a mistimed downshift causing the car to over-rev and lapse into limp mode. They got back up to speed and finished second overall.

Jack had a few bumps in the Volkswagen Up on the first two stages and the next loop saw the engine begin to develop a rattle and lose power. That ended any hope of catching second, so they made sure of their third position.

The battle for fourth was the closest of the day, Ruan Lowry and Ian McRae eventually winning out over Thomas Milne and Neil Jeffrey.

The next event is on another fast airfield track, with two days of competition at Machrihanish, near Campbeltown, on July 8/9.

The championship runs from March to November.

Podium places at Crail: 1 Oliver Phillips and Barry Young; 2 Rian Walker and Stuart McBride; 3 Jack Ryan and Robin Nicolson.

Jack was leading the way in the series ahead of the Crail event. He has dropped to second in the drivers' championship table with 84 points, just two behind Oliver. Ruan is third with 75.
