Wick Academy were out of action at the weekend having been knocked out of the Highland League Cup by Nairn County in the preliminary round.

Their victors were knocked out in the first round on Saturday as Keith claimed a 3-2 victory over the Wee County.

Elsewhere, Brora Rangers claimed a standout 7-0 victory against Clachnacuddin as Paul Brindle's hat-trick, a double by Jordan Macrae and efforts from Kyle Macleod and Max Ewan helped them into the second round where they will face Forres Mechanics.

Goals from Ethan Cairns, Craig Mackenzie, Lee Fraser and Jack Grant saw the Can Cans knock holders Banks O' Dee out of the competition with a 4-2 victory away from home.

Fraserburgh had a convincing 9-0 victory away to Deveronvale which included a Scott Barbour hat-trick and a brace from Sean Butcher. They go onto to face the side bottom of the Highland League, Strathspey Thistle, after the basement team earned a narrow 1-0 victory against Lossiemouth as a second-half penalty by Owen Paterson saw the club into the next round.

Buckie Thistle secured a routine 4-0 victory against Turriff United with goals from Darryl McHardy and Marcus Goodall gave them a commanding half-time lead, before further strikes from Joshua Peters and an own goal completed the scoring. Buckie will be away to Keith in round two of the competition.

Formartine United, meanwhile, fell to a 3-1 home defeat to Brechin City, despite taking the lead through former Brechin striker Julian Wade. The away side fought back with goals through Liam Duell, Stuart Heenan and Marc Scott. Ewan White's sending off gave Brechin a scare, but did little to change the outcome of the game.

Inverurie Loco's win over Rothes completed the action in the GPH Builders Merchants Highland League Cup round one, as Greg Mitchell's double and Callum Duncan's strike early in the first half saw the Railwaymen into the quarter-finals where they will travel to face Brechin.

The next round of games will be played on September 9.
