Standards were high at the Caithness Riding Club’s Spring Show which saw a good number of competitors coming along to take part in the two-day event.

Working hunter judges on the Saturday were Kirstin and Lara Hourie from Orkney, while running an expert eye over the in-hand and ridden classes the following day was Jane McNaught, from Ayrshire, of the National Pony Society Scotland.

Held at the indoor school in Halkirk, over the last weekend of April, the event included NPS Blair qualifiers. The success of the weekend was largely due to the volunteers who came along to help.

It was a great show for Bryony Jack, who took home three championships with her eight-year-old Welsh Section C gelding Donys Stand N Deliver, bred by Jacky Kirk at Donys Stud.

This partnership won the large Mountain and Moorland (M&M) in-hand qualifier class on the Sunday morning and then picked up the M&M in-hand title before taking the overall in-hand championship. In the afternoon they continued their success with a win in the open large M&M ridden class and went on to take the ridden pony championship.

Bryony has had Donys Stand N Deliver for two years and this is their first open season after a successful novice campaign last year.

“We hope to continue to have a successful season competing in in-hand and open ridden classes as well as working hunter as he loves being out and about,” Bryony said.

The working hunter horse champion title on the Saturday went to Ruth Sutherland’s Saint James, a six-year-old, 16.1hh German warmblood by Monte Bellini. This new partnership won the 70cm working hunter class. The following day they won the over 158cm ridden class and went on to take the reserve sash in the championship.

Saint James was previously produced and shown by Katie Jerram for a client from her yard in Kent.

Ruth said: “He had not jumped before I bought him in December as he was only used as a flat show horse – so is only just starting his jumping education.”

She hopes to start his British Dressage career later this year.

Taking the working hunter pony championship was Morven Mackenzie with Llynhelyg Lady Cilla, an eight-year-old Welsh Section D mare by Gobell Telynor and out of Llynhelyg Princess Alice. When Morven got Cilla two years ago she had to restart her under saddle as she had been used as a broodmare.

“She’s a lovely mare who is well loved by all as she’s a real character,” Morven said. “We're hoping to do a few more shows this year along with maybe the odd one-day event in between to keep things interesting.”

The ridden horse championship went to Erin Hewitson with Whaupshill Touché, known by his stable name Che, a 17-year-old appaloosa gelding by Tyersal Blizzard. Owned by Khara Findlater, this talented horse has had an impressive eventing career.
