Jack Halliday will be “a big miss” after playing his last game for Wick Academy in Saturday’s Highland League match at Keith.

The English midfielder, who turned 30 recently, is moving to the Glasgow area. He captained the team to a 4-0 win at Kynoch Park as the curtain came down on the 2023/24 season.

Halliday was replaced by teenager George Ewing after 77 minutes, shortly after the third goal had gone in.

Halliday was born in Crawley and moved to Caithness when he was seven.

He made his Academy debut in 2011 but then had spells in Australia, where he played for Yoogali Soccer Club, and in Edinburgh, before returning to Caithness. He became a regular fixture in the Scorries’ midfield from the 2017/18 season.

Manager and team-mate Gary Manson said: “Certainly over the last five years he has become a real mainstay in the team and a really important player for us. He will be a big miss.

“There are not many players like him. He’s quite unique as a midfielder in terms of the pace and the power he’s got. Once he starts running with the ball, teams find it very hard to stop him.

“He has been captain of the team in the absence of Richard Macadie and Alan Farquhar in the last two or three years. He has been a big character in the dressing room as well.

“We won’t be able to replace him like-for-like, because he is a unique player in the skill set that he has, but we’ll have a look around and see who is available and see who we can bring in and try to fill that hole as best we can.”
