ANDREW Douglas proved to be the best of British when he strolled to victory in the Home Countries Cross Country International at Falkirk.

The Mountain Running World Series champion continued his impressive form on flat ground when he beat off top athletes from Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland to finish the 10K course first in a time off 31 minutes 27 seconds.

The North Highland Harriers athlete from Halkirk was five seconds ahead of Englishmen Alex Teuten with Alastair Watson third.

Douglas (28) started 2016 in a remarkable week when he won road, hill and cross country races inside the first nine days of the calendar year, which included him winning the Scotish inter-counties title in Edinburgh.

Last weekend he won the Inverness Half-marathon and earlier this month finished tenth out of 136 of the best cross country runners in the world at the Antrim International Cross Country in Northern Ireland.

As well as preparing to defend his title at the 2016 Mountain Running World Series, he is also aiming to put himself in contention over the next two years to represent Scotland at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.
