Gunn treble hits mark for Lybster
LYBSTER’S Bobby Gunn fired in a treble as the Cow Park side finally chalked up a notch in the winning column with a 3-1 home victory against John O’Groats.
Gunn bagged a hat trick with Eddie MacGregor notching a consolation for John O’Groats who also had Iain Green forcing the moon in the sky to take cover as he blasted his missed penalty into orbit.
For goal hero Gunn, it was a momentous achievement – especially as this was his first time playing as centre forward.
He said: “That was my first game upfront. I’m normally a centre half but we had plenty of those available so I was asked to play as a striker. Given what happened, I think I might ask the manager if I can stay up front. But I’m happy to play where I’m told.
“I know the focus is on me because of the hat trick but we played a sweeper system with three at the back and it worked superbly. The guys in defence played really well.”
At the top end of Division One, Wick Groats’ imperious run keeps on going as they made it five wins out of five with a 1-0 win at title rivals Staxigoe United thanks to Sandy Sutherland’s strike.
Groats’ boss Kevin Anderson said: “We used our cup defeat to Staxigoe as a wee bit of motivation going into this one and it worked.
“We played really well and deserved the victory. Staxigoe are no mugs but we managed to dominate and really should have got another couple of goals.
“We’ve made a good start. They only games we’ve lost have been in two penalty shootouts – no-one has been able to beat us in the regulation 90 minutes. But we are well aware that Pentland United are breathing down our necks so we’re not talking about the title at all.”
Pentland United kept up their pursuit of Wick Groats with a 3-2 at home to Thurso Acks.
James Murray, Gary Manson and Conor Cormack struck from United with Acks’ goals coming via Allan Munro and Louis Webster.
Michael Gray of Pentland said: “It was a pretty hectic game. We went 2-0 up and then in a crazy minute let them peg us back to 2-2. Thankfully we managed to seal the points thanks to a very good individual goal from Conor Cormack. We’re just concentrating with one game at a time and hoping to get some consistency with our form.”
