Greens unlucky in sevens tourney

The Greens reached the quarter-finals in the Garioch sevens tourney at Inverurie.

The Greens travelled with a youthful outfit and were unlucky not to progress beyond the quarter-final stage. They twice came from behind to win their three-team group.

After conceding the first try to Ellon in their opener, they ended up comfortable 19-7 winners thanks to a brace of tries from Kris Hamilton and one from Gordie Macleod.

It was the same pattern in their second tie versus hosts Garioch. Hamilton again crossed along with Danny Gordon and Yeager Coghill to secure qualification.

The Greens were two tries behind to Mackie at the break in their quarter-final. But they came back with good spells of ball retention and good attacking lines putting Hamilton and Gordon over for tries.

A third try had them in front, only for Mackie to respond to tie the scores at 19-19 at the end of normal time.

The Stonehaven outfit missed the chance to go through when its kicker fluffed a drop-kick after Caithness were penalised in front of their posts. But they regained possession from the ensuing drop-out and worked an overlap to cross for the clinching score.

The drop-kicking duties for the Greens were shared between Hamilton and Liam Brims.

The final was an all-Aberdeen affair with Grammar beating Wanderers to win the silverware.

Hamilton is unavailable for tomorrow's Highland tourney in Inverness, though Norman Foubister and Mark Anderson could come in.

* The curtain came down on the RBS Caley 1 on Saturday when Orkney showed no mercy on bottom side Glenrothes.

The Fife side travelled to Kirkwall needing a three-digit win to avoid demotion. That was never going to happen and, by the end of the match, they were scrapping to avoid the ignominy of shipping a ton of points. The islanders ran in 14 tries to clock up a 95-0 win.

Glenrothes go down along with Aberdeen University.

Caley 2 Midlands winners St Andrews University defeated Caley 2 North champions Moray 21-0 in Saturday's play-off for a spot in next year's Caley 1. They will be joined by Ellon who are relegated from National Division 1.
